Sponsors to be buried at groundbreaking

Habitat for Humanity of Champaign County will host the groundbreaking for two houses at 507 and 509 E Bradley in Champaign this Saturday, May 19, 2007, at 10 a.m. The homes will be built in partnership with the listeners of the Illini Radio Group Stations, Thrivent Financial for Lutheran, area Lutheran congregations, and the Zina Allen and Serafin and Maria Dominguez families.

In addition to special guest speakers Senator Mike Frerichs, Christine Scheffler from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and Mary Lynn Foster from 92.5 The Chief, the home owners will bury a time capsule with the names of all of their donors and partners.

Zina Allen and her daughter Shayla Reddick are both natives of Urbana. An employee of Cingular in Rantoul, Zina's coworkers have already signed up to help on the build site. "I don't feel like this is a handout," Zina said, "because I worked hard.I earned this." The Allens' current apartment building has switched owners four times in six years and is slated to become deluxe condominiums putting their home of seven years out of reach financially. "Now, I won't ever have to wonder if there is some place we can go. I will have a home of my own."

Serafin and Maria Dominguez moved to Champaign 17 years ago. Having worked in agriculture, Serafin is now a cook at the University of Illinois. Maria works on the production line at Plastipak. Claudia attends Parkland College while Christian is at Urbana Adult Education Center. Brenda, born in Champaign, attends a local grade school.

When asked what buying a home meant to them, Serafin could not say thank you enough times. "I'm very grateful for strangers helping us, their kind hearts. If the tables were turned, I would do the same." In fact, all of the Dominguezes have already begun that work. With 500 hours of sweat equity to complete by the end of their build, all five family members have been in the ReStore, an investment in families beyond their own. ReStore Assistant Manager Bobby Northcutt describes Serafin as an "outrageously hard" worker.

Both families were selected based on their need (substandard, crowded or disproportionately costly housing), ability to pay the mortgage (subsidized cost, no interest, over 20 years) and willingness to partner with Habitat and Champaign County (responsibility, integrity, sweat equity). The process involved extensive documentation, reference checks, interviews, and home visits.

Please join us for this celebration!

More than picking up a hammer

Looking to get involved but Saturdays on the build site don't fit your schedule? We have any number of ways you can get involved with Habitat for Humanity. Volunteering with the ReStore is an ongoing opportunity that supports building homes, building relationships and building community. It can be as hands on as helping with our delivery service to as simple as collecting plastic shopping bags for the store's use.

For example, if you like speaking to groups and are passionate about Habitat, we need you! Requests come in regularly for presentations to schools, businesses and churches, groups of 5 to 100.

The Faith Relations/Speakers Bureau has developed an application for Habiteers who want to make their skills available. Applicants will indicate availability, skill and audience preferences. After training and "ride-alongs," members of the speaker pool will be contacted according to their preferences. For more information, contact Eileen (director@cuhabitat.org, 217-359-0507 x111).

We are also in need of fun-loving, detail oriented individuals to join our Volunteer Committee. This Committee works to recognize and thank all of our volunteers through events and other activities. Please contact either Courtney (volunteer@cuhabitat.org or 355-6460 x 116) or Ellen (house@cuhabitat.org or 359-0507 x 110) for more information.

For more information about volunteering with the ReStore, please contact Courtney at volunteer@cuhabitat.org or 355-6460 x 116.
