We love Susan!

Three-year veteran of the Saturday cash register, Susan Drozdz, continues to shower her fellow volunteers and the ReStore staff with love...in the form of meatball sandwiches. Thank you, Susan!

You've got some great stuff!

Drop off donations are accepted any time during ReStore hours. Please pull up to the southeast garage door and ring bell for assistance.

Too large for your vehicle? Schedule a donation pick up! Donation pick ups are a $5 fee in C-U, and $10 outside C-U within a 15 mile radius. Contact us at (217)355-6460 x120 or ReStore@cuhabitat.org to schedule.

4th Anniversary Sale going on now!

Anniversary Sale!!

May 25-27

10% off Friday, May 25
20% off Saturday, May 26
30% off Sunday, May 27

Sunday only 40% off final hour (4 - 5 p.m.)

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore will celebrate its 4th Anniversary with a storewide 10-30% off sale May 25-27.

“I’ve had a great experience with the ReStore,” said Dennis Vidoni, who has been a volunteer with the store since it opened as HOMEWORKS in 2003. “I like helping people get things at an affordable price for their homes, and knowing that the money we raise goes to Habitat for Humanity has kept me motivated over the years. I think with our new location, the ReStore is becoming a recognizable place and part of the culture of Champaign-Urbana.”

Glenn Harringer, a long time ReStore customer said, “I love the ReStore because it provides a wonderful resource for recycling and a new life for items. You can find so many vintage and unusual things that you wouldn’t find in a traditional retail environment.”

The store will expand its hours starting June 5th to be open an extra hour in the evening. New store hours will be: Tuesday – Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 1-5pm. The store is closed Mondays.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is currently accepting donations during store hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 1-5pm. Pick up service is available locally by calling 217-355-6460 x4.

Thank you, Courtney!

A round of applause and thank yous to our Courtney Egg, Habitat’s founding ReStore Volunteer Manager. As many of you know, she’s been doing double-duty with full time work for the ReStore and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. She will return her focus solely to Krannert’s patron services so if you ever need a cough drop, you know who to look for. We are grateful for her passionate outreach and program development. Thank you, Courtney!

A beautiful Saturday

Dear Champaign County:

Thank you for joining the Dominguez and Allen families, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, the Illini Radio Group, area Lutheran congregations and Habitat for Humanity of Champaign County last Saturday. To break ground on two homes with such joy and genuine fellowship is a rare gem and one we treasure.

Thank you to Sen. Frerichs and Council Member Jackson for reminding us of the personal and political stakes in home ownership for people living in poverty.

Thank you to Chris Scheffler of Thrivent Builds Homes for making Champaign such a priority in her constant tour of Illinois partnerships.

Thank you to Mary-Lynn Foster for her heart-felt work behind the scenes and behind the microphone to raise awareness about poverty housing.

Thank you to Richard Craig for sharing his connection to and passion for our new homes.

Thank you to Pastor Terry Strom, a native of Champaign County but new leader in our Lutheran community, for reminding us of our guiding light.

Thank you to Julia Schmidt and Joan Wingo for rallying volunteers and funds and a delightful connection to so many hard workers.

Thank you to Norm Fisher and Ann Hollenbeck for providing beautiful photographs.

Thank you to home owners Karen Hite (1999, First Presbyterian Church), LaVonda Dorsey (1998, Habitat move and rehab), Sandra Holloway (2004, Bike & Hike), Waddah Sweid (2007, Student Chapter) and Maricela Corona (2008, Women Build Homes) for welcoming your fellow home owners into the circle.

Thank you to Zina Allen, Shayla Reddick, Serafin, Maria, Claudia, Christian and Brenda Dominguez for letting us into their lives so intimately, allowing their hopes to help us grow.

With 63 of us attending, I’ve undoubtedly forgotten someone and I apologize. I hope to see you all over the course of this build and again at the dedication on September 15.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Family Selection and Family Support Committees, and the staff at Habitat: THANK YOU!

Eileen Gebbie
Executive Director

The Poverty Business

Inside U.S. companies' audacious drive to extract more profits from the nation's working poor.

In recent years, a range of businesses have made financing more readily available to even the riskiest of borrowers. Greater access to credit has put cars, computers, credit cards, and even homes within reach for many more of the working poor. But this remaking of the marketplace for low-income consumers has a dark side: Innovative and zealous firms have lured unsophisticated shoppers by the hundreds of thousands into a thicket of debt from which many never emerge.
