| Brought to you by IBEW Local
601 |
| |
For several years, IBEW Local 601 has volunteered
their time and talent to Habitat for Humanity home building
projects. We are extremely grateful and impressed by the ongoing
dedication displayed by IBEW Local 601 to eliminate poverty housing
in Champaign County.
Having recently completed electrical work on their
twelfth and thirteenth Habitat homes, IBEW has contributed over
$45,500 in labor and expertise.
Habitat's continued
partnership with IBEW has been a key factor in keeping home prices
to a minimum. Knowing that we can rely on IBEW Local #601 to donate
electrical installation on each Habitat home also assures home
owners and supporters of the quality of our new homes. Their
continued support has not only helped move several families out of
poverty housing, but has also opened doors to working with other
labor unions.
At each home dedication, IBEW Business
Representative, Mike Herbert, presents the homeowners with a 5-year
warrantee certificate on the work. "It is the least we can do to
give back to our community," says Herbert, "It is a win-win where
our workers get to use their talent for a family in need. On the day
of the home dedication, it is a thrill seeing the faces of the
family that is about to move into their very own home."
Thank
you, IBEW Local 601, for building homes, building relationships and
building community in Champaign County. |

| Want to Become a Habitat Homeowner? Know
Someone Who Does? |
| |
Our affiliate has recently changed its application
process to better serve the organization and our community. We are
now using an intake model and working with families one-on-one as
they express an interest in Habitat
homeownership.
Selection Criteria Habitat bases
selection of homeowner families on three criteria: need for adequate
shelter, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat to
build a home. Habitat cannot help families with immediate housing
needs. Our application process takes 30 to 90 days, and it is
usually a minimum of one year from the time a family is selected
until their home is built.
Income and Credit
History Applicants must meet certain financial eligibility
criteria (minimum and maximum income
levels, no bankruptcy within the last two years, no outstanding
civil judgments). A report from one of the three major credit
reporting agencies is required; we look at accounts that have been
charged off or in collection, payment histories, and the amount of
current indebtedness. In general, families need to have an annual
income of at least $19,000 to qualify for a Habitat home and minimal
long-term debt.
Residency Requirements Applicants
must be residents of Champaign County for at least one year or
working in Champaign County for at least one year and be willing to
relocate to Champaign County. We currently have lots available in
Urbana and Rantoul and would welcome the opportunity to acquire more
in the outlying county; we do not build homes outside Champaign
County.
Work History Applicants must have a stable
work history or a reliable source of income that is expected to last
at least three years. They should have been in their current job at
least six months. Current and former employers will be contacted for
verification of employment and references. Applicants must have the
documented right to work in the United States.
Willingness
to Partner Homeowners are required to invest a minimum of 250
hours of volunteer labor in Habitat projects after they are selected
and before they are allowed to move into their homes. Prospective
homeowners must be able to make this time commitment. Accommodations
are made for persons with disabilities who might be unable to work
on the build site, but the requisite number of hours must be
invested.
If you know families who would be candidates for a
Habitat home, we would like to talk to them. Have them call 359-0507
ext. 130 to schedule an intake appointment or stop by the ReStore
(119 East University Avenue, Champaign) during business hours and
fill out a contact information sheet (available from the
cashier). |

| Brothers, sisters and
paint |
| |
by Ellen Willcox, Build Volunteer Manager
(217-359-0507 x110 or house@cuhabitat.org)
On
Saturday the 11th we painted. Both homes now have two semi-expertly
applied coats. We had a lot of families on site:
+ Jessica
Dickson and her mom, Jan Brooks. + Habitat Board President Bill
Tredway and his wife Kathy came over after attending the ground
breaking Amber Overcast's home. + Brothers Wayne and Byron
Bekiares helped paint while their wives, sisters Christine and
Susan, prepared our delicious lunch. Wayne and Byron worked very
well together - each was all too happy to point out to the other
when they missed a spot or had dripped. I did have to separate them
when they began a duel with the paint rollers.
As we get
closer to the end of this build, I have started thinking about all
of the wonderful people I have met and worked with and how much I am
going to miss you all.
Thank you to Nilsa Almenas, Jan
Brooks, Jessica Dickson, Byron, Christine, Susan and Wayne Bekiares,
Kim French, Karen Hawthorne, Herman Reddick, Beth Veile, Wayne
Wendland, Paul Speers, Elder Brimhall, Elder Wardell, Bill and Kathy
Tredway, Henry Gerlach, Vern Magnuson, George Kieffer, and Eric
Sheu. |

Resident pirate and Episcopalian priest Mark Middleton
is bidding fond farewell to our affiliate's financial office. "I
could not be more proud than to have shared in the blessing that is
Habitat."
Thank you, Mark, for your service to and care of
Habitat's programs, ReStore and home owners. We will miss your
whimsy. |
